Middle School Summer Reading (2025): Rising 6th Grade

Required Rising 6th Grade Summer Reading 2025

When you have completed all parts of the summer reading assignment, email your responses to:  Lauren Nolli

  • Name your document: First Name Last name Summer Reading 2025 (for example, John Smith Summer Reading 2025)
  • Give your email the subject line: Summer Reading 2025
  • Send your completed work by Wednesday, August 20th to Lauren Nolli.
  • Remember to attach your response document
  • Your reading responses will be your first grade in English 6
  • Remember to bring a physical copy (not an ebook or audiobook) of the following books to your first English class of the year:
    • What Happened to Rachel Riley by Claire Swinarski (all school read)
    • Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
    • The Bridge Home by T.V Padma
    • A Place at the Table by Laura Shovan
    • Your choice reading book

What Happened to Rachel Riley? by Claire Swinarski

As you read, consider how you will answer the following  prompts. Copy and paste the prompts into your document and complete in one to three sentences.

Good readers make connections.

  1. A connection between the book and myself is ...
  2. A connection between this book and something else I’ve read is ...
  3. A connection between this book and the world (a historical or current event) is ...

Good readers ask questions.

  1. What questions did you have before, during, and/or after reading?
  2. I wonder… (What do you wonder now that you have read What Happened to Rachel Riley?)

Good readers visualize the text.

  1. Pick a scene from the book and illustrate it. Write the page number(s) and describe the scene and characters in a paragraph. Scan or take a photo of your work and include it in your email.

Choose another book to read.

Any genre is acceptable, including graphic novels, non-fiction, or novels in verse.

Using the “Letter to the Author” template, type a letter to the author in your Google document. You may change the sentence stems as they apply to your book or add sentences as needed.
